TLOS And Saklikent

TLOS Saklikent

Spectacular in the spring with snow on the mountains that stand tall behind the theater, it’s an interesting Lycian city in Asia Minor, in the Mediterranean region of Turkey, because of the presence of the Ottoman fortress of “Bloody Ali” (Kanli Ali in Turkish), a local brigand in addition to the Lycian and Roman remains.
The 19th century archaeologist Charles Fellows who re-discovered Tlos in 1838, and several other nearby sites, had this to say about the approach to Tlos: “The whole ride down this upper valley is beautiful and varies continually; it’s scenery, on approaching the bold Greek like situation of the ancient city of Tlos, is strikingly picturesque”.

Nice to approach on foot if you feel up to it. A dolmus (local transportation by minibus) running along the little road that serves Xanthos and Saklikent can drop you at the bottom of the access road and the 4 kilometers (2,5 miles) hike gives you a feeling for the situation of the city. It’s the sort of site you can take in quickly or linger on for an afternoon.

Here you can see the tomb of Bellephoron. The carvings on the tomb represent Tlos’ main claim to archaeological significance. On the slope of the hill there are several Lycian sarcophagi and some other rock tombs. Another feature is Yedikapi, The seven doors or gates in Turkish. Following signs for the Hamam or Turkish baths you’ll come to a very dramatic set of seven arches overlooking the whole valley. Don’t miss the theater. Some charming carvings scattered about and the backdrop of the mountain range and the valley is hard to beat for spectacle. Other ruins in the city include a Roman stadium with a capacity of 2,500 people and a 150 meters-long agora (market) next to it.

The Dalyan Region

Dalyan Region

Located in the province of Mugla and possessing one of the most special gifts of nature and history, Köycegiz stands beside the same named lake at the tip of which touches the Mediterranean. Now a nature and wild life preserve, this site is home to many species of birds and is a real paradise with its rare and beautiful setting, and with a history going back to 3500 BC. It is possible to cruise over the natural labyrinth-like channel walled with reeds, that link the sea and the Lake of Köycegiz, which is described as “smooth as glass” till noon and suitable for wind-surfing in the afternoon.

The lake contains almost every kind of seafood including carp and crab. Dalyan can be reached at the end of a road decorated with scented frankincense trees. The Dalyan Delta is a unique site, lying peacefully with its 4 kilometers-long golden beach. Sea turtles of Loggerhead Caretta Caretta and blue crabs live here making the area more attractive. The beaches where these sea turtles nestle can be reached by a boat ride from Dalyan town, passing through beds of bulrushes and pampas grass in the river.

On the other side of the channel is the marvelous view of the ancient city of Caunos, which was situated on the border between Caria and Lycia and was an important sea-port. The site can be reached by boat or on foot. The first sight here is the fascinating tombs carved into the rock and overlooking the waterway. Also of interest in this district is the acropolis lying a little inland, together with a Roman temple, antique theater, agora, Ibrab and Susandaa castles.

The Dalyan region is not the last site in Köycegiz to offer natural beauty. The Gulf of Göcek, with its many bays facing numerous islets is another spot. Holding a lovely marina, it constitutes a perfect center for sailing, and there are also ruins of the ancient city of Arymaxa, furnishing a different scenery. You can also take a mud bath on the bank of the river, its’ rich minerals such as calcium and magnesium which are beneficial for the skin.

As sailors generally wake early, sail during the day, and sleep early, the most active time in Gocek is between 19:00 and 22:00 hrs, during which time the many bars and restaurants are buzzing with clients. As is usual in most seaside towns there is a delightful esplanade along which you can see and be seen.
